Antique Dressers

Antique dressers have long been a speciality of apollo antiques, devon's leading antique dealers.  Antique dressers originated in the 15th century, but the form we are familiar with today, came into being in the mid 17th century.   At this time most were made in oak, but antique dressers were also found in walnut, pine, elm and very rarely yew wood.  The antique dressers of the 17th century   There are two basic forms of dresser, the high dresser with a rack above either open or closed and the low dresser or dresser base as it is more universally known.  Canopied dressers those with closed racks above were made from 1650-60s in Wales and the westcountry shortly afterwards.  These were a source of pride in the home, as the rack was used to display, pewter, slip-ware, and other items of value, intended to impress guests.  The canopied dresser had its heyday in the early eighteenth century, both in Wales the westcountry and throughout the UK.  Antique dressers have become a must buy for many people, as they not only look great, but provide great storage and display space.
