The English regional chair is a fascinating subject within the world of antiques. Simple country chairs were made in regional pockets all around the country and all have their differences and idiosyncrasies. Most of these chairs came from the High Wycome and Windsor areas.
This one is from Cornwall and was made between 1800 and 1820. It has similarities to the Yealmton chairs in Devon, but the shape of the legs and the back, the square flat front to the seat and the thin irregular spindles all indicate that it is Cornish.
The seat is probably elm although sycamore was often used in the westcountry. The rest is ash and has developed a fantastic rich colour where it has been worn back through use.
The chair is totally original with no breaks or repairs, and is very firm and stable. There are no loose joints or any movement in the chair.
The measurements are 23 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 41 inches high, and 16 inches to the seat.
Delivery can be arranged to any part of the country. As a guide, delivery to London and most parts of the south of England would be £85. Collection is, of course, welcome.
